Opera Challenge: Day Sixteen

Today: Favorite Couple

Easy-peasy: Leonore and Florestan.

Do I even have to say why? Their loyalty to each other is unsurpassed in opera; separated for two years before the opera begins and then for almost half of the action, these two go through hell to find each other. Whether they are played by a youngish couple or an older couple, you just know that Leonore and Florestan have weathered all of their trials, and that they will live Happily Ever After.

I talk in more depth about them here, so I'll let you all go read (or re-read) that post. But I'll give my good friend, Kristina, a shout-out here. Back when I first discovered Fidelio, I did what I always do to my friends: made them watch the dvd with me. So we were all chilling and watching this opera (the Zurich production), and somehow the conversation rolled around to appropriate uses of "you stole my man". Kristina pointed at the tv.

"THIS is REALLY, Bitch, you stole my man!" she said. Indeed.
