Opera Challenge: Day Twenty-one

Today: Opera I listen to the most.

Beethoven, Fidelio, with Wagner's Die Walkure being a close second.

I listen to Fidelio a lot because, 1) I love the music, and 2) because I'm novelizing it and want to get as much of the music as possible into the prose. The story itself fascinates me (hence my prose version: I'm on Draft Five and taking this process of turning opera into fiction extremely seriously), and the music is simply sublime. The way it traverses frivolity, domesticity, fear, hope, pain, ecstasy, rage and finally unbelievable joy just gets me every time. I don't think that any composer but Beethoven could have pulled off the masterpiece that is Fidelio.

And Die Walkuere? Believe me, it's easier to roar around Berlin when you have a bombastic soundtrack playing on your iPod. That, and I love Act 1 so much that I listen to it just to kill time and get my blood up.
