I love Dussmann's on Friedrichstrasse: it's four stories of books, music, and dvds. The entire basement is devoted to classical and opera, and has this wonderful stage for people who wish to sit down and play something. I like to take the programs for upcoming concerts and read them, just sitting there surrounded by all that music.

Music shop looks great, and like the programmes. Re Carmen - JK did the whole of the last scene at the Jussi Bjorling Gala on Friday - I watched the whole show today on Swedish TV - having found the link on JK's unofficial website, which I have only recently realised is very authoritative. Marion Tung gets a long mention in "Meinen die wirklich mich?' which I have just bought, and am working my way through with a dictionary auf Deutsch. You probably know all this. Having abandoned opera and powerful music for 6 years, until Feb this year, I am still catching up..... it's been a roller-coaster ride..... JK also sang 'quel vino e generoso', 'in fernem Land' and ' vesti la giubba'. He wasn't just superb, he was majestic.......
Very glad Berlin is providing riches........
@shapta-dakini: I do have Kaufmann's book, and have managed to get through large chunks. I have to admit that it is a very enticing reward for learning to read German. :)
Isn't the unofficial website great? I know JK is in cahoots with it, because she sometimes says things like "Herr Kaufmann emailed this to me" and so on. I think there's even a section on it in his book.
And hey, don't worry about catching up: I was raised on classical opera and am still learning so much about the rest of the operas out there that sometimes I feel I'll never be as authoritative as I want to be.:)
Dussmann's looks drool-worthy! Thanks for the scoop; it will definitely be bookmarked as a Thing To Do When I'm Next In Berlin.
FWIW I've read the book and found it somewhat frustrating, on the whole, although the flashes of Kaufmann wit/wisdom/nerdery are entertaining.
@Lucy: Nerdery? What sort of nerdery? But yeah, I agree that from a biographical standpoint, it's frustrating. It's so much more Day in the Life of an Opera Singer than My Life by Jonas Kaufmann. Although maybe that was the point? I don't know.
Yes, Dussmann's is amazing.
