This is scary, and by scary, I mean heartbreaking. And can anyone tell me what it is he's saying when the aria ends? My German isn't quite at the point where I can understand when they speak so fast.

not seen that before - the work of the wonderful Esti! It is so cute......I love rehearsals. All I can make out is that he says it is too heavy a couple of times, and then they are counting the shackles, and after they take some off he says it's better, and that it's his left arm (so that's ok). but I bet you got all that anyway.
You have Christine Schafer doing Traviata at the Schiller Theater in December - maybe you could get a job as an usher....... I am listening to her Winterreise a lot. Very good for Halloween -she makes it so unearthly - and seems to paint in delicate watercolour where the men paint it in sticky oils. ( JK's won't be like that of course, when he records it...........)
I got a ticket for JK's Don Carlo in Munchen - the first night 15th Jan. Went into shock when the ticket arrived in the post - I thought they would email me and had given up getting one in their infernal lottery system. JK - Don Carlo - the first night - in his home town...........front row second level - be still oh heart. And without my London friend to ply me with white wine - maybe I'll order champagne for the interval............
The first time I saw this, I nearly chickened out before he even started singing because Florestan sobbing is Just Not Okay.
Translation: JK: The thing's just heavy as lead. Perverse! Really... WHY must everything be realistic, that's what one asks oneself... [stagehands come over with expressions of concern] Unbelievable! And when you're supposed to hold it so high while singing... Want to have a go at lifting them? S1: No no no, I believe you... Discussion: let's have a look, we've got three... maybe we could have two... or... JK: Well it does look really great, it's just that it's crazy... S1: Crazy difficult, I think so too. [Muttering I can't catch] JK: Exactly! S1: Which is the heaviest? This one, I think... let's take it off. JK: You see, it's got a nice grip on me too! That's from just now. S1: That's from just now?! JK: That's from just now, it's not painted on. S2: Well, it fits with the rest of the makeup, but I guess it's bad for circulation. It can be another one of your tortures. JK, laughing: Right! You know, you're totally right, they should draw a lot more on there for when she takes it off at the end, you should be able to see lots and lots of blood! S1: So how's that now? JK: Oh, much better, of course, no question, but... S2: It's a shame to lose them. JK: It is, yes. But you know, I said 'Oh, it's aluminum, it won't be that heavy,' but this must be 5 or 6 kilos... S2: Well, it'll be a workout for you. JK: Yeah, but only with the left arm! S1: Ok, we'll go with this, we can work out details later... Repetiteur: Can we continue? JK: But of course!
@shapta-dakini: DUDE I wanted to see that "Don Carlo"! Lucky you! Seriously, you should make a blog and tell us all about it. Also, I hear JK is doing Winterreise here next year, which I hope to be around for. But until then, Christine Schaefer it is. And you know, I just might make her "Traviata": I've never seen it live before, and I know from experience how good she is.
@Lucy: This particular Florestan scares the mierda out of me. If the Zurich Florestan was left in a dungeon to rot, this one has just been tortured beyond belief. I think it's the blindfold that does it-the idea that they went for his eyes makes me kind of sick. THIS Florestan will never fully recover. I could go on and on and on, but I'll spare you.
Thanks for the translation, too. He sounded a little cranky; glad to know I was right on that front. S2 seems less than sympathetic, but imagine having to sing with 13 pound weights on your arm...
@Christie Being the Fidelio-obsessive I am, I combed the internet for reviews and photos of this production, with deeply upsetting results. Somehow I have a feeling we could end up going on and on about this while talking over each other with distressed hand gestures (if you're a hand gesture sort of person.)
@Lucy-Yeah, I could go on about it for hours. And I tend to flail at people when I'm in to something, so yeah. There would definitely be lots of gesturing going on. I'm curious: which videos did you find? Because I know this one (http://jkaufmann.info/clips_fr/2008_France2Fidelio.htm) and this one (http://jkaufmann.info/clips_fr/2008_TF1Fidelio.htm), but that's all. The first one shows just HOW brutal Pizarro is; it's terrifying. I really wish they'd just put it out on dvd and put me out of my misery.
