Bad Things to Hear in the Opera

1. "I hear Grimes is looking for an apprentice again."

2. "Grab your shovel, we have a man to bury."

3. "Good news: I invited my long-lost brother to spend the night. I'm sure you'll get along great."

4. "I pissed off Dad; you've gotta back me up on this one."

5. "I think my cough is getting worse."

6. "If you hate me, I'll love you, but if you love me, well, them's the breaks."

7. "Uh, sir, I-I think that statue just moved."

8. "No, no, do the honorable thing. That won't possibly affect any of us badly."

9. "Hey, man, I need a favor."

10. "So, how're things between you and what's-his-name?"

Got any others, people?

Which baby did you throw on the fire?

Did you say she was marrying Philip?

@Operaramblings: Ooh, good ones!

Haha! These are great; I love John's as well. Number 10 is the only one I can't really place (8 and 9 could multitask, I think.) Also "I need you to swear an oath" rarely ends well, somehow.

@Lucy: #10 is technically "Tosca"-Act One Scarpia before he gets her thinking-but it could be any opera in which there's a tangled relationship. #8 is "Werther" and #9 "Tosca", but you're right that they multi-task. And AMEN about oath-swearing in opera. Bad, bad idea.
