Sometimes, you just need flowers.

Flowers

And a lace dress

And a Strauss lied.

He sang this on Wednesday evening at the Birmingham concert with the CBSO. The audience was absolutely still - it's possible we will never hear Morgen better sung. He is just so good with the Strauss - it was strange to hear the orchestral accompaniment this time -very luscious. I'm happy to go back to the intimacy of the piano (i.e. Helmut).

He was, of course, wunderbar. But I think feeling his way with Kindertotenlieder (the first outing of this tour). He looked utterly anguished - maybe he just needs to let his voice do the work, and not think too much.........
I have been getting to know Kindertotenlieder with a disc of Agnes Baltsa, and the Kathleen Ferrier version with Bruno Walter. Both fantastic, but there is no-one like KF for unaffected delivery.

I had such a good seat - middle stalls - the closest I have been to the Presence ( is this blasphemous?) Anyway, it took me hours to come down from the high.

I am off, in 2 weeks time, to a Tibetan Buddhist monastery at the foot of the Himalayas (not joking....) - an annual event for me. This I need, in order to calm down - the last couple of months have been just too too exciting-

I will check in to see what you are up to during a break from sitting in the shrine room for 6 - 8 hours a day - we have to queue up for the computers......

PS. flowers, lace dress, Morgen. You forgot the cookie-dough ice-cream.............

PPS. the hair is extremely chic.

@shapta-dakini: You were at the Birmingham concert?! Lucky!!! I can't WAIT to hear his Kindertotenlieder-I heard elsewhere that he was shaky, but given that 1)it was his first time and 2) he has kids, I can imagine him being anguished. One review I read said he was all teary.

You're going to a monastery? That is so cool! Seriously, you ought to start up a blog with all of these adventures.

Oh, and are you still willing to give me a ticket to the JK concert in June? Because I think it's on my brother's birthday, but he wants to go to London either way. Please let me know!

Sunday 10th June 2012. 7.30pm. Jonas and Helmut. Definitely. Very glad you think you can make it. Arrive early to people-watch......

You can use my email for fine-tuning the arrangements - hil@scribblers.demon.co.uk

Which Kindertotenlieder are you going to? I would love to hear him again, to see how it develops.....but foreign travel budget all gone!
