Wagner in the Ubahn

If you get off of the U7 line at Richard Wagner Platz, you will find yourself in a shockingly bright yellow and black shrine to a certain megalomaniacal German composer. Large murals line the walls on both sides of the station, depicting scenes from the operas. You can spend a lot of time walking from one side to the other, looking at the pictures. Whoever came up with this u-bahn stop was clearly a huge Wagner fanboy.

I assume that the original sketches and the other art in the upstairs part of the station date from the original Richard Wagner Platz, which unfortunately went through renovations sometime in the 1960s. (If you haven't been to Berlin, believe me when I tell you that we have some swanky U-bahn stops.) I had some time today and was in the area, so while I waited for my train, I snapped the following pics. Warning: this post is image heavy.

Oh the irony that you won't find a Wagner production anywhere in Berlin that looks anything like those illustrations! ;-)

@Ivis: Well, Deutsche Oper's "Lohengrin" came pretty close, but...yeah. :/

Hahaha, WOW. Those over-the-top 19th-century images are amazing.

@Lucy: I know, right? There are some mosiacs of the Tannhauser characters in the upstairs hall that I haven't posted yet.
